Chapter 6

Panic flooded through Padean. Serena had gone completely pale beneath him and wasn’t responding. Shit, what had he done? He put his hand over her mouth and didn’t feel anything.

He pulled out of her and put his head on her heart.

Ta-TÃ¥t-TÃ¥-Tatt Ta-TÃ¥t-TÃ¥-Tatt Ta-TÃ¥t-TÃ¥-Tatt

Her heart was beating steadily. He exhaled his pent up apprehension.

He rested his head on her forehead. “Thank the Fates, you’re alive.” He stroked her hair. “Sweet Serena, open your eyes. Please.”

Her eyes fluttered open, but now instead of bright green, they were glittering gold. Her skin shimmered. Something was terribly wrong.

“Are you okay?”

She put her hand on her forehead. “I feel so strange. My skin is tingling all over. I saw this woman.”

He blinked. “What? A woman?” Talking about knocking down his ego. “Never heard that one before,” he muttered.

She dropped her hand. “She said her name was Ythei. Do you know her?”

He felt the blood drain from his face. “Ythei? You’re kidding?”

“No,” she drew out the word. “Why would I lie?”

“Ythei is one of our Fates. She told you her name?” It was more of a question than a statement. He gripped her shoulders. “What else did she say?”

“She said she was passing on her power to me.” Fear flashed into her eyes. “Padean, what’s wrong?”

He gently pulled her up to a sitting position. “The Fates are like our gods. She told me she was dying. I always thought she was immortal.”

“You mean she’s real?”

“Yes.”

Her face paled. “What kind of power do I have? Am I dragon?”

“To be honest, I don’t know. Ythei’s power was that she knew which Zalarain would have the next mate and would bring the mating stone.”

“Mating stone?”

He reached over and picked up the light green stone and pressed it into her trembling hand. “This. When Zalarains mate, we give this to our chosen mate. This stone matches the color of my dragon.” He looked down at her breast. “You now wear the mark as I do.” He rubbed his right pec.

She glanced down at her breast and caressed the green dragon tattoo underneath her right breast. He held his breath, waiting for her response.

“It feels warm. Almost as if hot wax had been poured over my skin.”

“What do else do you feel?”

She frowned. “I told you, really weird. I’ve never felt like this before. Am I going to die?”

“I don’t think so, no. Ythei wouldn’t have transferred her power to you if she didn’t think you could handle it.”

“Why me?”

“Maybe it’s because you’re a matchmaker, too. Just like her.” He tilted his head. “We’ve got to tell the captain.” And Lauchlan. Padean’s gut tightened. That was something he didn’t relish doing.

“We should put on some clothes first.”

She flashed a small smile. “Ya think?”

Quietly they got dressed. He kept going over his meeting with Ythei over and over again. She had said she was dying, but he didn’t think it would have happened the exact moment he claimed Serena. This wasn’t good. Who knew what the Fates would do, especially Rillo? How could he protect Serena? He was only an Inquistian dragon.
